Slow phone or black screen: how to fix it

A phone that lags, freezes or suddenly shows a black screen can ruin your day, especially when you rely on it for work, maps and payments. Before you pay for a repair or a new phone, try the fixes below. Most slowdowns come from storage, software and background apps, and many “dead” screens turn out to be a frozen system or a drained battery.

Why is my phone so slow and freezing?

Phones slow down for a handful of predictable reasons. Work through these in order.

1. Restart it

It sounds too simple, but a restart clears memory, stops stuck processes and fixes a surprising number of freezes. If you have not restarted your phone in weeks, start here.

2. Free up storage

When storage is nearly full, phones slow down dramatically because the system has no room to work. Try to keep at least 10 to 15 percent free. Delete apps you do not use, clear large videos and move photos to cloud storage (see our guide on phone storage for step-by-step tips).

3. Update the software

Install the latest iOS or Android update, plus app updates. Updates fix bugs that cause freezing and patch security holes. Charge the phone and use Wi-Fi first.

4. Find the app causing trouble

– On iPhone, check Settings, then Battery, to see which apps use the most power; heavy users are often the ones slowing things down. – On Android, check Settings, then Battery or Device care, and look for apps running in the background. – If the problems started after installing a specific app, uninstall it and see if things improve. – Close apps you are not using and limit widgets and live wallpapers, which use memory constantly.

5. Clear app caches (Android)

On Android, clearing the cache of heavy apps like browsers, social media and streaming apps (Settings, then Apps, then the app, then Storage) frees space and can fix glitches without deleting your data.

6. Check the battery

An aging battery can cause a phone to slow itself down to avoid unexpected shutdowns. On iPhone, look at Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. If capacity is low, a battery replacement can make an older phone feel fast again for much less than a new phone.

7. Factory reset as a last resort

If nothing helps, back up everything and do a factory reset. It removes years of clutter and often makes a phone feel almost new. Restore only the apps you actually use.

How do I fix a phone screen that will not turn on?

A black screen does not always mean a broken screen. Often the phone is on but frozen, or the battery is completely drained. Try these steps before assuming the worst.

1. Charge it properly

Plug the phone into a wall charger with a cable you know works, and leave it for at least 30 minutes. A fully drained battery may not show anything at first. Also check the charging port for lint with a flashlight.

2. Force restart

A force restart fixes most frozen, black screens and does not delete anything. – iPhone 8 and newer: press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. – Most Android phones: press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons together for 10 to 20 seconds until the phone restarts. Samsung and other brands may vary slightly; check the manufacturer’s support page.

3. Check whether the phone is actually on

Call your phone from another number, or plug in headphones and listen for sounds. If it rings or vibrates but the screen stays dark, the display or its connection may be damaged, which usually needs a repair shop.

4. Look for signs of damage

Recent drops, water exposure, a swollen battery (the screen lifting from the frame) or the phone feeling hot are signs of hardware damage. Stop using and charging a phone with a swollen battery and take it to a professional.

5. Try recovery mode

If the phone shows a logo and then goes black, the software may be corrupted. Connecting an iPhone to a computer and using recovery mode, or using Android’s recovery menu, can reinstall the system. This may erase data, so it is best done with help from the manufacturer’s instructions or a store.

The bottom line

Restart regularly, keep storage free, stay updated and watch battery health, and most phones stay fast for years. For a black screen, charge it, force restart and test whether it rings before paying for a repair.
